What is a Hamstring Strain?

Hamstring strain is a very common injury of the leg that involves a tear in one or both of the hamstring muscles… A hamstring strain can range from mildly painful to so severe that it involves a complete tear of the hamstring muscle.
You have four Hamstring muscles… They are the Semimembranosus & Semitendinosus (medially) and Biceps Femoris – short and long heads – laterally.

What Causes a Hamstring Strain? We need to break this up in to 2 areas as … 1. Strength, Timing, & Stiffness & 2. Improper Use.

1. Strength, Timing, & Stiffness! Poor existing strength in the Hamstring muscles. Followed up with bad timing of the intermuscular coordination in the swing phase of sprinting. Stiffness to some health practitioners is the way your hamstring is able to absorb rebound shock!
Note: Once you have had a hamstring strain it is very important to learn how to stretch correctly… To reduce the chance of future hamstring injuries!!!

2. The Improper Use OF The Hamstring!

Bad Ergonomic… Sitting in a chair for long periods of time that shortens the Hamstring.

Poor Running Style: At the point of ground contact in running, this puts the hamstring into a compromising position.
Not Warming Up Before & After Exercise Your warm up must activate the Hamstring in preparation for the sport or task ahead.

To Much Weight In Training Loads. Be aware that your Gym weights are not set too high! Keep in mind that it is about repetition over weight, and not weight over repetition.

Hamstring Fatigue Your hamstrings are fast to fatigue, and so high speed exercise should be done early in your workout… As close to your Warm Up as possible!

Chronic Lower Back Injury. This can lead to the lead to weakening of the Lower Back (lumber spine) and pelvic area… This can lead to nerve dysfunction and weakness of the Hamstring muscles.

Playing Surface: Best example is a wet slippery surface that will strain the hamstring due to slipping!

What Are The Different Grades of Hamstring Strains?

The 3 grades of hamstring injury are used by General Practitioners in the diagnoses of Hamstring injuries: Grade 1 is a mild muscle pull or strain. Grade 2 is a partial muscle tear. Grade 3 is a complete muscle Tear.
