“Don’t let the sun go down on me” – Elton John (1974)
Yes it is a great song from Elton John, but all jokes aside we are meeting clients that are not getting enough sun. The sun is the best source of Vitamin D, and the effect it has on your mood is not to be taken lightly.
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D forms in the skin when it is exposed to UV from sunlight. It can also be obtained from some foods. We need Vitamin D to maintain good health and to keep bones and muscles strong and healthy. Source: Cancer Council Australia
Because of the constant threat of cancer, or being at work before the sun rises and not leaving till after the sun sets the general population risk depleting their Vitamin D reserves in the body.
This depletion of Vitamin D is being linked to ‘Depression’ like symptoms.
Sure you could blame your grumpy February mood on the post-holiday blues, some severe thunderstorms, or your Football team again looking as sad as they did last year.
Another possible culprit: Not enough Vitamin D may be what’s making you depressed, according to a study from the University of Texas. In what is probably the largest study on Vitamin D and Depression ever conducted, researchers examined more than 12,500 clients over 4 years. The findings: The lower the levels of Vitamin D in a clients blood, the greater their chances were of suffering clinical depression.
Please keep in mind that to gain sufficient Vitamin D, an exposure of around five minutes direct sunlight during mid morning is sufficient. We are not suggesting you sunbake. 🙂
