Stress Management: 3

The stress response is a natural survival response to fear. It prepares the body to either fight the problem or to take flight from the problem, thus the ‘fight or flight syndrome’.

This preparation starts with the emptying of the digestive and urinary systems and increasing the levels of energy supplies in the blood. Then blood flow is moved away from these systems towards the heart and lungs so that they can get oxygen and increased energy to the skeletal muscles so that the body can fight or fly. Prolonged exposure to this level of stress response can cause a cumulative effect on the body’s systems with increased muscle tension and congestion, altered functioning in digestion and overall increase in blood pressure.
