Whether we like them or not, computers are a daily part of modern life. If you had said even 20 years ago that every person in Australia would own or have access to a computer I would have laughed and said that is absurd. Because no one is going to be able to afford a computer!
Wow wasn’t I wrong!
I am amazed how many clients I am meeting that are being injured by their poorly equipped or outdated workstation. I remember in the early 80’s the big push for change in the workplace health and safety, due to the number of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) reports.
It is evident due to the number of clients I speak with about their work practises which lead to injury, that we all could do with a look at ergonomics at our workplace and at home. This leads to prevention of injuries and far less time seeing your Bowen Therapist to rectify those injuries. Remembering that it is individual for everyone and what works for one person may not work for another.
In the above illustration you will see depicted an office worker whose posture looks correct. However, the office worker should be using the back support of the chair at an angle just past 90 degrees. The keyboard should be lower, so that the wrists are not lower than the fingers. The monitor is in the right positioning however. What we can’t see is that the office workers feet should be flat on the floor with the knees at just over a ninety degree angle.
As a throw away society things do not last. An example of this is the office chair!!
So in fact you are not buying an office chair, you are renting the time you have it.
Observation and Communication
It is one thing to notice the office chair is worn out, it is another to do something about it. I am amazed how many clients do not want to appear as though they are whinging to their employers by asking for a new office chair. The client never realised that if you get the replacement chair, your productivity will go back up because you are comfortable.
And that makes for a most cost effective purchase by any employer.
Keep in mind your posture when using the computer at home and remember to set your laptop up to work with the above principles. The problem with a mobile workstation is that we do tend to use it anywhere, couch, bed or even the floor.
So as the year 2012 continues, remember the Telephonist’s Rule from the 80’s in the workplace: 25 minutes on..5 minutes off and in that 5 minutes get up walk around and drink more Water! 🙂

Celebrating 20 years
At the end of November 2011, I, Benjamin Setter celebrated 20 years as a Bowen Therapist operating in this wonderful city of Townsville QLD. I would humbly like to thank all of you who have walked though my door over the last 20 years, and allowed me to help you through some very trying times in your lives. It has been a wonderful journey to be your Bowen Therapist in Townsville QLD, and to watch as you have recovered from injury using Bowen Therapy.
What is Bowen Therapy?
A Bowen Therapist rolls the muscles to stimulate the nerves underneath. In a set system of these moves, we get the body to respond and realign. In essence we are getting the human body to work for itself.
