What is an Sprained Ankle?

A sprained ankle occurs when the ligaments attached to the ankle joint have been overstretched. Ankle sprains occur when playing sports or just by doing everyday activities. Stepping the wrong way on uneven surfaces, or stepping at an awkward angle that twists or rolls the foot can lead to an ankle sprain. Sprains may bring on a range of pain from mild to severe. Treatment range from RICE: rest, ice, compression, elevation for ankle sprains. To the use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that can alleviate pain and swelling.
